Pre-Planning Myths Debunked: Addressing Common Concerns

July 25, 2026

Preplanning is about protecting your family, honoring your wishes, and making informed decisions about your end-of-life care. There are a lot of assumptions floating around about funeral pre-planning, and unfortunately, many of them aren’t true. At Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, we’ve heard just about every concern, and we’re here to clear up some common myths.

Myth #1: “If I’m a veteran, the VA will pay for everything.”

False.

Veterans' VA benefits typically cover specific items, such as a burial allowance, a gravesite in a national cemetery (if eligible), and a government-issued headstone or marker. They do not cover the full cost of funeral services, transportation, or other expenses. Veterans deserve recognition and honor, and while there are valuable benefits available through the VA, preplanning allows you to understand exactly what is covered so your family isn’t left with unexpected costs.

Myth #2: “My life insurance policy has to be used for my funeral.”

False.

Life insurance benefits are paid to your chosen beneficiary, and they decide how the funds are used. Many families intend to use life insurance for funeral expenses, but there is no guarantee they will. In some difficult or strained family situations, funds may be used differently from how they were intended. Pre-planning puts your wishes in writing and designates funds specifically for funeral expenses. This way, your wishes are filled and the money is used for its intended purpose.

Myth #3: “I’m sure I’m covered.”

Usually False

We often see families who are under the impression they have full coverage, only to discover they do not. Rising costs, policy limitations, or lapsed coverage can leave payment gaps. In some cases, we also see families who have more coverage than they actually need! At Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, we offer reviews of your current coverage to best help you and your family find a plan that aligns with your final wishes and financial situation.

Myth #4:” My beneficiary knows what to do.”

Maybe, but not always.

Even the strongest family members can struggle when faced with grief. Family members want to honor their loved one’s wishes but during a time of grief, even the most put-together person can feel overwhelmed. Pre-planning doesn’t replace your beneficiary; it supports them. By documenting your preferences, you remove the overthinking and uncertainty from your beneficiary so they do not have to make any difficult decisions while facing emotional pressure.

Myth #5: “Prices keep going up, so I don’t want to deal with it right now.”

True, but this is why you should.

Funeral costs, like most other services, increase in price over time. Pre-planning locks in the cost of professional services and select items such as caskets or urns at today’s prices. If you choose not to pre-plan, you will end up paying more later, after prices increase further.

Myth #6: “A funeral isn’t necessary. I don’t need anything specific.”

Respectfully, we disagree.

Many older generations don’t want to make a “fuss,” but we’ve seen how meaningful a service can be for those left behind. Having a funeral gives your loved ones closure, connection, and a moment to honor your life.

Myth #7: “I have coverage through my job.”

True, but it may not be permanent.

Employer-provided life insurance can change when you switch jobs, retire, or if the company reduces benefits. Some things to ask yourself are “Where is my insurance coming from?”, “Is it portable?”, and “Is it guaranteed long-term?”. If you are unsure of any of those answers, you may not be covered as you thought. Pre-planning prevents your coverage from being dependent on employment status or future changes, and puts you in charge of your coverage.
